FAST-BIE-1 (TRENPK3) Introduction to British and Commonwealth
English is a basic course in both the FAST and English Translation
curricula. It is offered in the autumn term each academic year, and is
designed to be taken, along with the parallel Introduction to American English, during
English Translation or FAST students' first year of study.
BIE-1 covers such topics as Received
Pronunciation, Estuary English and Standard English. It also includes a
brief survey of Cockney, Scottish English, Ulster English, typical British
English vocabulary and British newspaper headlines. Evaluation is by a short paper or a course examination.
