In sharp contrast to the former stereotypes of Speedy Gonzalez and Frito Bandito are this photo
of the Columbian pop star Shakira (Left, at the 2006 Grammy Awards, where
she took top honors) and recent cover photo from the upscale magazine Two Mundos, which with magazines like
Latina is redefining the public
image of Hispanic Americans. Note that the title Two Mundos itself
is a form of 'Spanglish', emphasizing the bicultural and bilingual
identities of upscale U.S. Latinos.
Is it a coincidence that stereotypical characters of the past were
usually male and rural, and the face of the new Latino image often female
and urban?
