Social Sciences and Humanities
At the Faculty of Social Sciences (SOC), the strong societal research of the University of Tampere joins the traditions of the humanities. Welcome to study the relations between society and individuals, and the changing nature of this relationship, in the Nordic way!
To study social sciences or humanities as an exchange student, you can apply for:
Degree Programme in History
Degree Programme in Philosophy
Degree Programme in Psychology
Degree Programme in Social Sciences
Degree Programme in Social Work
The teaching language in the degree programmes: Finnish. However, every year there are selected courses offered in English in almost all study fields.
The courses taught in English: compiled every year in the teaching schedule under the title “Studies offered in English in the Faculty of Social Sciences”. The exchange students may also apply to courses offered by another degree programme than their own host programme, provided there is space available in the course and they have sufficient academic knowledge to study the subject in question.
The Faculty also offers a module “North American Studies”, which is open to all students and has annual teaching in English.
Finnish Society and Culture: once in a semester, the Faculty of Social Sciences hosts an introductory course on Finnish society and culture (3-5 ECTS), especially intended for international exchange and degree students. The course is open for students in higher education institutions in Tampere (Unipoli). The lectures are given by experts in the fields of e.g. Finnish History, Welfare State, Foreign Policy, Technology, Innovations, Literature, Culture, Music, Art, Design, Environmental issues and Forestry.
Independent studying: It is also possible to complete some study units in English, not available as contact teaching, by writing an essay or by taking a set book exam.
