Social programme

Tampere Summer School arranges social events and free-time activities to help students get to know each other as well as the city of Tampere and the Finnish way of life.

Some events are free of charge for Summer School students, some for extra cost. Enrollment is required for all activities and events. Admitted students will receive enrollment instructions in advance.

All Social Programme fees are collected upon enrollment and they are non-refundable.

Tampere Summer School 2018 will start with registration and a Welcoming Ceremony where students have the opportunity to gather together for the first time and to hear the official opening words for Tampere Summer School 2018!

Abseiling down the Pyynikki tower

A great way to test ones courage is to abseil down a 26-meter tower wall at Pyynikki observation tower! Read more: Kelo ja Kallio adventures.

After abseiling, participants have the opportunity to enjoy coffee or tea and the best fresh doughnuts in town (at own cost)!

Vapriikki museum: Tampere 1918 exhibition

Exactly 100 years ago, Finland was divided by a bloody civil war. Tampere was one of the most important battle sites, and bullet holes are still visible in some old buildings in the city centre. Vapriikki, the largest museum in Tampere, houses an exhibition focusing on the events in Tampere in spring 1918. The exhibition presents a large cross-section of a society at war, from children and the elderly to workers and factory managers.

After the guided tour in the 1918 exhibition, students have an opportunity to explore other exhibitions in Vapriikki at their own pace.

Canoeing + campfire

Enjoy great company and amazing landscapes while canoeing on Lake Näsijärvi! You’ll be paddling in a big canoe (6-8 people) and taken care of by the instructors of Hiking Travel Hit. The journey takes you to Tapatora island, where you will be enjoying coffee and some food around a campfide before paddling back.

Have you ever tried Karelian pastries, the Finnish savory delicacy with rice pudding inside a rye dough? Nothing is better than home-made Karelian pastries fresh from the oven! In the Finnish food evening, you will learn how to make these pastries yourself. The menu also includes a tasty soup and a dessert.

Interested in trying out the traditional Finnish sauna and taking a dip in a beautiful Finnish lake? This is for you! We’ll spend the evening at Viikinsaari Island in, a verdant summer haven, located only 20 minutes away from Tampere city centre. Bring your own towel and bathing suit! Visit to Moomin Museum

The only Moomin Museum in the world opened in Tampere Hall in June 2017! Tove Jansson original Moomin illustrations are a key part of the museum’s atmosphere. They tell where it all began and what Moomins were like when they were brought into this world by Tove Jansson’s pen. After the guided tour (45-60 minutes), students have time to explore the collection themselves or visit the museum shop.

Kickback bikes + campfire

This tour will take you to the forest around Tampere on a kickback bike! The tour includes a break at Niihama cottage, where you will be able to grill some food on a campfire, play games and maybe find some blueberries!

Bonus: Day cruise to Tallinn on 18 August!

Tampere Summer School and Viking Line offer you a chance to take a day cruise to visit Tallinn, the charming capital of Estonia, right after the Summer School! The journey starts in Helsinki, and you will be back there the same night.

  • time: departure from Helsinki Saturday 18 August at 10:30 (participants must be at the terminal at least 1 hour before departure!)

Please note that this cruise is not officially part of Tampere Summer School. The participants are have to organise their journey to Helsinki independently, and Tampere Summer School accepts no responsibility of the students taking part in this journey.

Other things to do in Tampere

Unipoli Sports

Unipoli Sports provides sports services for university students on three campuses around Tampere: City centre, Kauppi and Hervanta. Tampere Summer School students can use the Unipoli Sports services for a reduced fee of 6 euros/person/visit. With this one fee, you can use the gym, attend group exercise classes and play ball games in the designated time slots. Just show your letter of acceptance at one of the sports centres and get moving!
