The programme is part of the European and Russian Studies Master’s programme (ERS) at the University of Tampere. It offers basic academic training in the field of International Relations, and special knowledge of the Finnish and Russian geographical operational environment. The programme graduates gain expertise in the EU-Russia relations and in the questions of regional cooperation and foreign policy in the Northern European area covered by the "Northern Dimension".
This is a joint Master’s programme organized by the University of Tampere, the St Petersburg State University (Russia) and the Petrozavodsk State University (Russia). The programme consists of lectures and seminars taught by teachers from various departments of all the universities, and supervised individual research for a Master’s thesis. A joint Spring or Fall school is also included, as well as an exchange to one of the partner universities.
Courses include for example: The European North: Historical Geopolitics and International Institutional Dynamics; Russia and European Security; Russia and the European Union; Russia-EU: Understanding Conflict and the Limits of Integration; The Politics of the Putin Presidency; From Finnish-Russian Relations to EU-Russian Relations.
Complementing studies may be required depending on the student’s previous study background. Studies require active attendance and participation in classes. The courses are organised only once during the programme period.
The Master’s programme lasts for two academic years and leads to the Master of Social Sciences degree in International Relations.
