Health services for university students in Finland are provided by the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) (in Finnish Ylioppilaiden terveydenhuoltosäätiö, YTHS). FSHS runs health centres in 16 university towns where students may obtain treatment. To receive these services, you must be a member of the Student Union and have a valid student ID card. FSHS provides free or low cost medical services like medical examinations and consultations, vaccinations, general medical treatment, specialists’ appointments and dental treatment. In Tampere the student health centre is located opposite to the University Main Building with another reception in the suburb of Hervanta, on the premises of the Tampere University of Technology.
For further information, please see the website of FSHS
The
Student Health Centres are closed in the evenings and at the weekends. During that time, if you fall ill seriously or have suffered injuries requiring acute medical treatment, you will need to go to Emergency Clinic at Tampere University Hospital (the Finnish name of the clinic is Acuta). The services of the Acute Care Clinic are not free of charge, so make sure you have proper health insurance.

EU/EEA citizens are entitled to the same social welfare benefits in Finland as Finns. Students who are citizens of the EU/EEA countries are advised to obtain the European Health Insurance Card (or other valid form) from the social service authorities before arriving in Finland. Students from the Nordic countries do not need to have the European Health Insurance Card.
In order to get a residence permit, students who are not citizens of the EU/EEA countries must have a health insurance if the period of study in Finland is longer than three months. For up-to-date information, please see the website of the Finnish Immigration Service: www.migri.fi
Medical insurance is recommended also for the EU/EEA-citizens, because the Finnish national medical insurance does not cover costs of repatriation, for example. The University of Tampere is not responsible for any medical charges incurred by its students.
