What is Finland University?
The Master’s Degree Programme in Research and Innovation in Higher Education (MARIHE) is an Erasmus Mundus programme offered in cooperation with University of Tampere (Finland), Danube University Krems (Austria, coordinating university), Beijing Normal University (China), and University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück (Germany).
All students of MARIHE will have study periods at partners DUK, UTA and BNU. For the internship at the end of the 2nd semester, students will be with an institution related to research and innovation in higher education. Internship placements will be provided at associated partner organisations, but also at other organisations that have agreed to accept interns from MARIHE. For the 4th semester students in MARIHE will have to decide whether they want to specialize in
- the field of management of research and innovation in higher education. In this case they will follow the management track and spend their 4th semester at University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück, Germany
- the field of research and analysis of research and innovation in higher education. In this case they will follow the research and analysis track and spend their 4th semester at either at Danube University Krems, Austria or at the University of Tampere, Finland.
Graduates of MARIHE will be awarded a joint degree.
For students following the research and analysis track (students spend 4th semester either at University of Tampere or at Danube university Krems), the consortium partners awarding the joint degree are the University of Tampere and Danube University Krems. Graduates will be awarded a joint degree titled Master of Administrative Sciences, M.Sc. (Admin.).
For students following the management track (students spend 4th semester at University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück), the consortium partners awarding the joint degree are the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück and Danube University Krems. Graduates will be awarded a joint degree titled Master of Science, MSc.
The students accepted by the programme will be granted a scholarship from the European Commission. It is also possible to apply to the programme as a self-paying student.
In Europe, as well as in other regions of the world, fundamental transition processes are taking place in the systems of research, innovation and higher education: from regulation to deregulation and competition; from steering to market; from administration to management. Higher education and research institutions need highly trained experts who are able to analyze these new contexts and who have management and leadership skills to deal with the changes.
Students of MaRIHE are taught by the leading edge of international scholars and have the opportunity to study in at least three different universities and countries – as well as get insight into fields of practice during an internship provided by international enterprises and organizations.
MARIHE programme provides students a unique opportunity to develop a sound understanding of the change processes of the society and how these link to higher education systems and university development with respect to policy making, management and leadership. Students are taught by the leading edge of international scholars and have the opportunity to study in at least three different universities as well as get insight into fields of practice during an internship provided by international enterprises and organizations.
The curriculum of MARIHE reflects on three perspectives on the change logics involved in the worldwide developments in higher education and in higher education institutions:
- the perspective on Systems in Transition, focussing on general developments and on globalization and regionalization (Europe, Africa, Americas, Asia) in higher education
- the perspective on System-Institution-Interaction (e.g. funding of research and innovation)
- the perspective on Institutional Change (e.g. change management in higher education).
Furthermore, modules on Theoretical Background introduce fundamental issues of higher education management. Another emphasis is given to Transferable Skills (e.g. research methods, presentation skills, languages).
Graduates of MARIHE will:
- have a sound understanding of the new contexts relevant to research and innovation in higher education (system knowledge combined with global and regional contexts)
- have a sound understanding of the relation between change processes and how these link to education systems and labour markets in general.
- understand the specialties of scientific institutions and how to adapt marketization and deregulation instruments to the needs and the culture of the institutions. They are competent in policy analysis and evaluation.
- have developed skills to link system change with institutional change and implementation of change in different contexts
- demonstrate the ability to analyse critically the relevant literature and to use it as a tool of analysis
- demonstrate also the ability to use research and research management skills and analytical methodologies appropriately and have the potential to move to doctoral studies
- develop management skills to deal with the changing environment inside HE and research institutions
- have the ability to apply management instruments in an adequate way regarding the knowledge triangle.
- demonstrate the ability to think and plan strategically, especially in relation to problem-solving as well as the ability to integrate knowledge, handle complexity, formulate judgements and communicate them to a wider audience
- show the ability to operate with stakeholders of research and innovation, in particular, business companies.
MARIHE programme is aimed for students who wish to pursue a career in the higher education and research sector as managers, administrators, consultants, policy analysts, researchers and decision makers. Possible employers include higher education and research institutions, public bodies such as ministries for science and education, enterprises specializing in education, think tanks and non-governmental organizations.
Doctoral study opportunities
The programme grants eligibility for postgraduate studies in administrative science, for example in the University’s Doctoral Programme of the School of Management.
Applying for the programme
- must hold a first university degree that should be at least a Bachelor degree issued by a university, quantified as three years of studies corresponding to 180 ECTS. Or, if ECTS is not used in the country where first degree was acquired: proof of a successfully completed period of study at higher education level considered comparable with a Bachelor’s degree. The decision on this will be made by the MARIHE Consortium.
- show a strong motivation and interest to learn and work in the field of development and management of research and innovation in higher education.
- have sufficient knowledge of English for academic purposes. For detailed requirements, please see the section "Language requirements".
Applicants must submit evidence of their good command of English. The following tests are accepted:
- Certificate from TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with test scores of at least score 575 (in PBT/paper based test) or score 232 (in CBT/computer based test) or score 90 (in iBT/internet based test). Note: scores from "TOEFL ITP/institutional testing programme" are not accepted.
- Certificate from IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with test scores at least IELTS 6.5 with no individual score below 5.5
- Certificate Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English from University of Cambridge) with minimum grade C.
- A Bachelor's degree or a Master’s degree in English from a university in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, excluding MBA degrees and online degrees, with the applicant having stayed in the respective country when studying for the degree.
- Secondary education conducted in English language in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or United States.
How to apply
Applications are to be submitted through MARIHE Application Database, where all applications are pre-processed. Applicants must be able to support their application with enclosures related to their educational background, language skills, and other qualifications and merits.
Eligible applications will be reviewed by members of the MARIHE Consortium Partners. The MARIHE Admission Board will select applicants and propose a scholarship main list and a scholarship reserve list to the EACEA.
At this time applicants on the scholarship main list will be contacted via e-mail and asked to confirm their application by handing in the hard (paper) copies of their application documents.
After approval of the scholarship main list and the scholarship reserve list by the EACEA all reviewed applicants will receive a notice via e-mail. Applicants on the scholarship reserve list will again be contacted in case their application is moved to the main list.

Students are selected to the programme from those applicants who fulfil the official admission criteria. Candidates for admission should be well qualified and capable of benefiting from the programme of study.
Student selection is made on the basis of application documents. All eligible applications to MARIHE are reviewed by members of the MARIHE Consortium partners. Applicants are assessed on the following merits:
- the applicant’s academic quality, judged primarily from the results of prior university studies.
- the applicant’s motivation and justification of the application in relation to prior studies, work experience (if applicable) and future career plans towards the aims of MARIHE, judged from the letter of motivation in combination with CV and the two letters of recommendation.
- the applicant’s personal skills, judged from the results of prior studies and the letters of recommendation.
- the applicant's English language skills, judged from the certificate provided.
Please note that work experience is not an admission requirement. However, work experience can be a strong advantage for an application, especially if it has been acquired working for (higher) education institutions. To have work experience acknowledged, applicants should clearly state it in their CV and hand in a confirmation of their employer with their electronic application. This confirmation should preferably describe the type of work experience (function and responsibilities) and include a judgement of the applicant's skills.
