You can collect your student ID card from the Student Union Office about three weeks after registration. During the first weeks, the Student Certificate which you will receive from the Registrar’s Office upon enrolment functions as a proof of student status and entitles you to the student benefits. For the bus and train discounts, specific certificates issued by the University Main Info Desk (in Finnish: Opastus) are needed.
Please, read the detailed instructions on how to collect your ID card on the Student Union website.
The Student Union menbership is compulsory to all students at Bachelor's and Master's level including exchange and visiting students. The membership brings you many benefits which you get by presenting your student ID card. In addition to Student Union services, you are eligible for treatment provided by the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS). In addition, it allows you to buy lunch at student prices at any university cafeteria in Finland, gives significant discounts on train, long distance bus fares, local buses, in a number of pharmacies, museums, theatres, concerts, and shops. The card is issued by the National Union of University Students in Finland (Suomen ylioppilaskuntien liitto - SYL). For more information on the benefits, please see the student union website.
For postgraduate (Licentiate and Doctoral) students, the membership of the Student Union is voluntary and the annual fee is EUR 47. Postgraduate students are not entitled to the same membership benefits as the students at Bachelor's and Master's level. Doctoral students are excluded from state benefits, such as discount on public transport or student-priced meals. However, post-graduate students can eat at somewhat lower price in Juvenes restaurants at the University by showing their student card or the Student Certificate at the counter. Neither are they entitled to the health services provided by FSHS. Membership entitles postgraduate students to use the services of the Student Union (e.g. legal advice free of charge, leisure activities, rental of Van) and to customer discounts at many companies (e.g. movie tickets). If you are a postgraduate student and choose not to use the services, you do not need to pay the membership fee.
