As a newcomer to the city, you will learn fairly soon that the people of Tampere are proud of their City Main Library. Why? To begin with, it was designed by Raili and Reima Pietilä to look like a woodgrouse seen from the air, that is how it got its name, Metso.
This library offers a wide variety of services and an even wider selection of books – naturally in foreign languages, too. You can use the library free of charge, but to borrow books you will need to order a library card (also free of charge). Library cards are issued on the ground floor of the library, just take along some form of identification.
Materials can be borrowed for four weeks with the exception of video tapes, CDs, DVDs, cd-roms (2 weeks) and sheet music (2 months).
