Race and Politics in the Pre-Postethnic U.S.

For years political discourse has assumed the collapse of a liberal consensus, largely but not completely because of divisions over civil rights. Now liberalism is back, but many believe we are in a post-racial world where race itself doesn't matter. But before we embrace this new world, it is important to reexamine what liberalism was, and how different racial and ethnic groups understood it, and themselves. I want to consider the story of American liberalism through the relationship between blacks and Jews in the US and in doing so, raise questions about identity politics, whiteness, and the death and rebirth of liberalism.
