Critical Skills in Education for Sustainable Development in Africa - Perspectives from Finland

The Department of Education of the University of Tampere, together with the Association for the Development of Education in Africa and Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland organize a two-day seminar at the Linna -building, lecture room K103.

ADEA -seminar in Finland

African countries have been able to significantly increase enrollments at different levels of their education systems, but the drop-out rates and relatively poor learning outcomes of many countries have raised again the question of quality and critical skills in education. The purpose of the seminar is to reflect on these issues through sharing research and practical experiences of education in Africa. This dialogue aims at contributing ideas for the preparation of the ADEA Triennial 2011.

The first day of the seminar concentrates on educational quality and teachers as providers of quality. Key speakers and panelists are Jean-Marie Ahlin Byll-Cataria (Executive Secretary, ADEA), Hamidou Boukary (Senior Program Specialist, Secretary, ADEA), Raisa Venäläinen (Consultant, former Senior Education Expert, World Bank), and Rauni Räsänen (Professor, University of Oulu). After the presentations and the panel, seminar participants will continue the discussion in two working groups.

During the second day of the key speakers are Teemu Leinonen (Professor, Media Lab, School of Art and Design of Aalto University), Tere Vadén (Associate professor, Hypermedia Lab, University of Tampere), Juha Suoranta (Professor, Department of Education, University of Tampere), Mika Raunio (Senior researcher, Research Institute for Social Sciences, Unit for Science, Technology and Innovation Studies, University of Tampere; Academic Coordinator of Globelics Academy) and Jyrki Pulkkinen (CEO, Global e-Schools and Communities Initiative). After their presentations we hear comments from African perspective on ICT and Innovation systems.

The seminar is open and free of charge for everyone. The registration continues until 19th of October. Please inform us which working group you are primary interested to be in, so that we are able to make the necessary preparations. See the seminar program here. The program and the seminar presentation materials can be in the ADEA news at http://www.uta.fi/laitokset/kasvlait/
