Work, Learning and Welfare: Writing Workshop II
3-4 November 2010, University of Tampere, Finland
The Work, Learning and Welfare research cluster of excellence (WoLeWe)
arranges a Writing Workshop on scientific writing on November 3-4, 2010.
The workshop is now arranged for the 2nd time due to the popularity and
positive feedback from the participants of the previous workshop. The
writing workshop is aimed at to doctoral and post-doc scholars doing
research on Work, Learning and Welfare issues.
The workshop provides an opportunity for researchers and doctoral
students to present article manuscripts and receive comments and
feedback from internationally recognized scholars, Prof. Stephen Billett
(Griffith University, Australia), Prof. Elizabeth Ettorre (The
University of Liverpool, United Kingdom) and Prof. Karen Littleton (Open
University, United Kingdom). The workshop also provides an arena to
discuss the current issues of research in the field. The chair persons
of the working groups are Prof. Anneli Anttonen (University of Tampere),
Prof. Anneli Eteläpelto (University of Jyväskylä) and Prof. Helena
Rasku-Puttonen (University of Jyväskylä).
The workshop sessions are open to 25 participants whose abstracts and
papers have been accepted. The deadline of abstracts (200-300 words) is
on 15 September (continued). The workshop participants will be informed of the
acceptance of their abstracts on 21 September. The deadline of papers
(max. 6500 words) is on the 11 October 2010. Please send your abstract

Workshop commentators:
Stephen Billett, Professor of Adult and Vocational Education:
Dr. Stephen Billett is Professor of Adult and Vocational Education in
the School of Education and Professional Studies at Griffith University,
Brisbane, Australia. Stephen has worked as a vocational educator,
educational administrator, teacher educator, professional development
practitioner and policy developer within the Australian vocational
education system and as a teacher and researcher at Griffith University.
Since 1992, he has researched learning through and for work and has
published widely in the fields of vocational learning, workplace
learning and conceptual accounts of learning for vocational purposes.
His sole authored books include Learning through work: Strategies for
effective practice (Allen and Unwin 2001); Work, change and workers
(Springer 2006) and edited books Work, Subjectivity and Learning
(Springer, 2006) Emerging Perspectives of Work and Learning (Sense
2008), and Learning through practice (Springer 2010). He is currently
preparing a sole-authored manuscript entitled Vocational Education
Springer. He is the founding and Editor in Chief of Vocations and
learning: Studies in vocational and professional education (Springer)
and lead editor of the book series Professional and practice-based
learning (Springer). Professor Billett is currently on the editorial
boards of 7 refereed journals, including the American Education Research
Journal, the second most cited journal in the field of education, and he
reviews articles for many other journals.
Elizabeth Ettorre, Professor of Sociology:
Elizabeth (Betsy) Ettorre holds a PhD in Sociology from the London
School of Economics. She is currently Professor of Sociology in the
School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Liverpool, United
Kingdom. Over the years, she has developed a focus on women and health
with specific interests in reproduction, drugs, sexuality, embodiment,
depression and most recently, autoethnography. Her most recent
publications are: Culture, Bodies and the Sociology of Health (Ashgate,
2010) and Revisioning Women and Drugs: Gender Power and the Body
(Palgrave 2007).
Karen Littleton, Professor of Psychology in Education:
Karen Littleton is Professor of Psychology in Education, Open
University, United Kingdom. Her research addresses the complex
inter-relationship of context and cognition and demonstrates that ways
of thinking are embedded in the use of language in social context, and
that learning is a fundamentally social process. Her work focuses on
understanding the cultural, social and relational nature of children’s
development and learning. She is the lead editor for Routledge’s
international book series Psychology in Education. She is author of the
books Creative Careers and Non-traditional Trajectories (Taylor,
Stephanie and Littleton, Karen 2008) and Dialogue and the development of
children´s thinking: a sociocultural approach (Mercer, Neil and
Littleton, Karen, 2007).
