Ontologies of the Event and Ontologies of Metamomorphosis

Abstract. Today we all know: the world, “our” world, lives a radical and perhaps irreversible transformation. The world alters before our eyes. Have we unleashed the process of its destruction? Yet, let me suppose that this moment of integral transformation offers an unexpected chance to philosophy, the chance to open up the ontological horizon of the political. Because, if the actual crisis of the political signifies nothing less but the transformation of the world, then the opposite is equally true: the actual transformation of the world entails a crisis of the political but also of the conception of philosophy as transformationist praxis. There is no doubt that this conception, which used to dominate the course of philosophy in the shadow of Marx and Nietzsche, has entered a crucial crisis. I will define then our philosophical moment as. What is the destiny of the project of transformation of the world in the actual post-transformationist situation? In order to approach a possibility for answering this question, I will try to present the question of transformation itself – or of metamorphosis – as ontological question: a question which has secretely traced and oriented modern philosophical thought.

He is a former Programme Director and Vice-President of the International College of Philosophy in Paris.
