Contemporary Kazakh Foreign Policy: Problems and Decisions

Dr. Aidar Amrebayev is deputy director at the Institute for World Economy and Politics (IWEP) at the First Kazakhstan President Foundation in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan. IWEP is one of the principal research institutes in Kazakhstan engaged with the study of world economy, international relations and regional and global security. The institute has an independent status and engages in public discussions in Kazakhstan. Dr. Amrebayev's disciplinary background is in political science and international relations. His list of publication includes more than 50 titles (monographs and articles). He has taught courses in philosophy, politics, modern political and legal theory, contemporary issues of international relations and questions of political modernization.

Kazakhstan is a rapidly modernizing regional power and integrator of the post-Soviet space in Central Asia. It is OSCE (ETYJ) Chair in 2010 and a summit of this traditionally European security organization is being prepared in Astana to take place in just a few weeks. It is therefore interesting to reflect on what the OSCE can contribute in and learn from Central Asia. This is the theme of an IWEP-TAPRI conference co-organized in March 2011 in Almaty by our research project (see the link below). Dr. Amrebayev is presently visiting researcher at TAPRI and will discuss security in Central Asia and, in particular, tell us about the foreign policy priorities of Kazakhstan.
