What multilateral institutions, and how much, does Northern Europe need?

This seminar will bring together different types of expertise to discuss what institutions are needed to support cross-border activities in the public and private/business sectors. Northern Europe is well known for its density of cross-border contacts, cooperation, traffic and trade. Many of these ties extend across the EU-Russia border. A wealth of institutions has been tasked with the facilitation of such cooperation, ranging from intergovernmental organisations and frameworks such as the Nordic Council of Ministers, Council of the Baltic Sea States, Barents Euro-Arctic Council, and Northern Dimension, to EU funded programmes, various business associations and platforms, as well as non-governmental organisations. Is this institutional set-up optimal? Do public institutions support the private sector in an adequate manner? Can the needs and means of the public and private sector be combined?

The seminar is open to the public and to the whole university community, and is part of the Autumn school programme of the Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University in International Relations/Master’s Programme in European and Russian Studies of the University of Tampere, St. Petersburg State University and Petrozavodsk State University.
