Endangered Languages in the Russian North: Overview

The lecture provides an overview on the current language situation in Northern Russia. The area is the homeland of several different indigenous peoples, who speak various unrelated languages but have been under heavy Russian cultural and linguistic assimilation pressure for more than a century and are now at the edge of extinction. I will present short linguistic and sociolinguistic descriptions of the relevant language families and their history and also talk about the question of minority language protection in Russia.
