Serious games and gamification

“Serious games” are defined as “games that do not have entertainment, enjoyment or fun as their primary purpose”. They are simulations of real-world events or processes, designed mainly for the purpose of solving a problem. Whilst their main purpose is to train or educate users, but they have other diverse purposes as well. Gamification is the concept of using game mechanics and experience design to digitally engage and motivate people to achieve their goals.

The aim of Serious Games at Westminster Research group is to conduct strategic research that focuses on understanding the factors and approaches that contribute to effective serious games design and lead in changes in various domains including: education; culture; healthcare. Gamification is one such factor.

The presentation will review the projects and technical and theoretical issues that are tackled via the research conducted by the SG@W research group focusing on serious games and gamification.
