Early Childhood Education Institutions, Policies and Practices (ECEPP) -tutkimusryhmä kasvatustieteiden tiedekunnassa
Dr. Prasanna Srinivasan (Monash University, Melbourne, Australia) will visit research group Early Childhood Education Institutions, Policies and Practices (ECEPP) at the Faculty of Education.
Educators cannot avoid meaningful recognition of diverse groups to mobilise relevant, accessible and purposeful educational experiences for all. As educators recognise and acknowledge these diverse groups, they construct images of society by positioning these groups in particular ways. These images stem from their understandings of themselves and others within that society. Educators draw upon those images to further engage in pedagogical acts. These images of groups and their positioning within that society influence the ways in which educators think, act and conduct inclusive practices with diversity. Thus, images of society held by educators become their discursive choice. In this presentation, I outline some of those discursive images; and the relationship between educators’ images of society and their choice in educating diverse groups within that society.
Dr. Prasanna Srinivasan’s research interests include surfacing the complexities of engaging with juxtaposed discourses of multiculturalism and nationalism in educational settings using critical race and postcolonial theories. She has extensive experience in critical research that inquires the interactions between cultures, languages and power in current socio-political settings. She has recently been involved in conducting comparative international study that analyses the attitudes of primary school teachers on cultural inclusion in their settings. She is currently involved in using street theatre and community participation to explore the (non)participation of young girls in education in Indian villages.
