Master's Degree Programme in Bioinformatics

The MSc programme in bioinformatics is taught entirely in English, and it is two years in duration, with an extent of 120 ECTS credits. The curriculum contains a module of methodological studies including computer science, mathematics and biology, an advanced module with in-depth focus on the methods and applications of bioinformatics. The advanced module contains the MSc thesis of 40 ECTS.

Bioinformatics applies methods of computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, and statistics to biological data from e.g. DNA, RNA or proteins. Bioinformatics is needed in modern biotechnological, biological and biomedical research and development, especially when dealing with large data sets produced by current high-throughput measurement techniques.

The degree provides you with skills you can utilize as a bioinformatician or biological data analyst and qualifies you to work in industry or continue your studies at the doctoral level.

Degree Programmes Taught in English (University of Tampere)

Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine and Biotechnology

Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine and Biotechnology is a graduate program jointly administered by the BioMediTech and the School of Medicine. Program focuses on multidisciplinary research training in molecular biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, bioinformatics, cell biology and systems biology.

All students are affiliated with research groups associated with the program. In addition to BioMediTech and the School fo Medicine and from the Department of Signal Processing and Biomedical Engineering of the Tampere University of Technology. At present, the school has 20 graduate studentships provided by the Ministry of Education to support full-time thesis project research for a period of up to 4 years. Some 60 additional students have funding for a similar period from other sources. Regardless of funding, all students share the same benefits and responsibilities. Funding for organizing courses, awarding travel grants, and internationalization is provided by the Finnish Academy.
