Aims:
The course aims at giving a comprehensive overview on using lower model organisms in research. As members of Biocenter Finland -funded Non-mammalian model organisms network, the course organizers are specialists in Drosophila and zebrafish research. Main topics of the course are covered in the minisymposium in the beginning of the course. The practical sessions introduce hands-on methods in Drosophila and zebrafish work. After the course, students should have gained understanding on the benefits and limitations of non-mammalian model organisms in research.

Course type:
The first day of the course is organized in a form of a minisymposium, which is open to everyone. Symposium features international speakers on the topic of non-mammalian model organisms.

Lectures on Tue-Thu will include practical and methodological topics, leading to afternoon practical sessions, which will allow hands-on experience in essential methods related to Drosophila and zebrafish work. Attendance on the practical course is limited to 20 persons. The course is open for everybody, but preference will be given to Ph.D. students.

Credits:
3.0 ECTS (the whole course) / 0.5 ECTS (minisymposium)
