Ph.D. Dissertation: "Favela media activism: Political trajectories of low-income Brazilian youth"

I have been at the University of Tampere since 2007, after getting a Bachelor’s Degree in media studies at Universidade Estácio de Sá, in Niterói (city in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). In my MA studies (concluded in 2009), I researched community media and participation in Russia (as part of the European and Russian Studies Programme of the Faculty of Social Sciences).

The MA period allowed me to become familiar with very important concepts and traditions to my current research interests. A feeling of duty as a Brazilian expatriate led me to study the Latin-American socio-cultural and political tradition in communication studies. From there, I expanded to international participatory communication research. Subsequently, I moved into more general participation, politics and citizenship research, especially concerning young people.

In my current doctoral studies, I am hovering over political science and sociology (e.g. different aspects of democratic theory) and  socio-cultural media studies (e.g. mediatization and mediations) with emphasis (but not exclusivity) on youth research.

I believe that participation in local, non-governmental, non-profit media are practices that allow (young) people to enact citizenship. With this in mind, my academic goals are to observe different participatory dynamics and contribute to the construction of more inclusive processes for (young) citizens’ engagement in political life.
