The Rector of tu university of Tampere has decided on 5 December 2013 that all doctoral dissertations and licentiate´s thesis that are submitted for pre-examination after 1 January 2014 must undergo a plagiarims check conducted by the Turnitin OriginalityCheck programme. At the University of Tampere, the Turnitin programme has been integrated with Moodle.

The steps of starting to use Turnitin:

1. Both the thesis supervisor and the author of the dissertation/thesis must participate in lessons on the use of the Turnitin programme. After the supervisor has participated int eh lessons, a new platform containing the Turnitin tool will be created for her/him in Moodle. When the author of the dissertation/thesis has also participated in the lessons, s/he will be added into the supervisor´s platform where s/he can submit her/his manuscript in the Turnitin programme for checking at different stages of the writing process.

2. After the suprvisor has given the author permission to submit the complete manuscript of dissertation/thesis and when the author is sure that the manuscrip is ready and all the references have been marked correctly, the author of the disssertation/thesis submits the manuscript in Turnitin for the last time for the official checking of the manuscript.

3. The supervisor reviews he orginality of the manuscript wiht the help of Turnitin plagiarism report. S/he will then confirm to the School that the originality of the manuscript has been verified in accordance with the Rector´s decision made on 5 December 2013.

4. After being notified by the School, the author of the dissertation/thesis will be added to a new platform in Moodle through which s/he will submit the final print-ready copy of her/his dissertation/thesis in Turnitin for the final time.

5. The printed thesis will contain this sentence: "The originality of this thesis has been checked using the Turnitin OriginalityCheck service in accordance with the quality management system of the University of Tampere." The model of the document is in the moodle are of the instructor.

After measures mentioned above to obtain permission to defend it as a doctoral dissertation, the student must submit the dissertation manuscript to the School´s administrative secretary, Merita Kallioinen (Room D227, University Main Building)) in three complete paper copies, in a binder of bound. The manuscript must also be sent to the School ( or If a student earned his or her licentiate degree at a university other than the University of Tampere, a copy of the degree diploma must be submitted together with the manuscript.
