COMET combines practical orientation with an ambitious theoretical approach to the field of media and communication research. It has gained national and international recognition for its research since its founding in 1996. For its 30-40 researchers, COMET provides a lively and collaborative working environment with an expanding international dimension.
COMET is located at the Faculty of Commucation Sciences at the University of Tampere in Finland. The centre operates on external funding from major national and international funding organizations, including the Academy of Finland, the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, the European Union, the National Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES), and various ministries in Finland.
COMET is organized into four thematic research areas: study and development of journalism, citizenship and democracy, media culture, and speech communication. In addition, through its further education and training courses, COMET has a strong linkage with the work of journalists and media educators.
