Challenges of Global Innovation Journalism

The project has three main goals:

1. The analysis of the experiences and research data on innovation journalism thus far by mapping out the global proliferation of the concept itself (innovation journalism) and examining the data produced by the education and development projects related to it. One of the target projects is the Finnish National Innovation Journalism Fellowship Programme in Silicon Valley, which is analyzed by way of participant observation, focus interviews and content analysis.

2. The study of the global practices of innovation journalism by analyzing their presence and role in services concerning climate change management, energy technology and senior citizens in different countries. Research methodology comprises content analysis of media coverage and focus interviews.

3. The development of innovation journalistic work processes with the help of three case studies. Two of the studies anticipate the challenges of innovation journalism and the development of news media by exploiting futurological methodology. The third case study concentrates on applying novel technologies to renew the journalistic process and producing an experimental magazine based on the latest advancements in ubiquitous technology.

The study is carried out in cooperation by the Journalism Research and Development Centre at the University of Tampere, the Department of Communication at the University of Jyväskylä and the Finland Futures Research Centre at Turku School of Economics.
