Thematic research groups

Cultural practices, agency and wellbeing (CULT) is taking a critical look at discourses on wellfare and wellbeing together with cultural practices aiming to participation in relations with media and arts. What kinds of participation and wellbeing are diverse cultural practices constructing? How are media and information literacies supporting the agency of users in techno-societies? Critical reflection takes place from the perspectives of human rights and parity of people. Research group is conducting studies, for example, in youth media participation and public agencies of users.

JUTU research group studies the formation of publics in the changing media environment. Due to digitalization, more actors than before are able to participate, produce and share media content, which has an impact on public discussion and public sphere altogether. Professional journalists, social media users, organizations, commercial players and public institutions are currently acting side by side in the hybrid media environment. It is important to scrutinize critically and open-endedly these media actors, the ensuing publics, and their interconnections. Recent projects by the researchers in the group have dealt, for example, with the changing nature of journalistic work, racism and public communication, global media events and online discussion.

Performance is a multidisciplinary research theme group, the members of which are interested in various kinds of performances of culture, as public manifestations of culture - from the perspectives of theatre and drama research, music studies or cultural studies in general. The objectives of the research of performance include better understanding of the possibilities of human agency, involvement, and interaction in our globalised and transcultural world, but also, better understanding of the performance as a mode, trace and product of human action.

Visual interactions group focuses on interactions with visual technologies, such as camera images, as well as on face-to-face interactions. We're interested both in how technologies mediate social interactions, as well as in the meanings that are embedded in their situational uses. Studies of photography, visual journalism, computer interfaces – visual media studies in general –  figure in the agenda of the group.
