This two-year study graduate studies programme was established at the University of Tampere in 2008 and the first cohort of students began studies in 2009. The programme is produced by the School of Communication, Media & Theatre (CMT), where the professorship is located.
This is an international master’s degree study programme. All coursework and assignments are in English. Studies emphasise management theory and practice in journalistic companies, particularly at the entry and middle management levels. Graduates receive a Master of Social Sciences degree. Coursework is taught by faculty within CMT, by colleagues in the School of Management (JKK), and by visiting professors from other universities (international as well as domestic).
The professor responsible for the media management programme, Dr. Gregory Ferrell Lowe, is an internationally recognised expert on public service media. He worked for ten years as Senior Advisor for Corporate Development to executive management boards of the Finnish national broadcasting company, Yleisradio (Yle), and was the Head of Yle Programme Development from 2002 - 2005. He is American and holds an MA in Mass Communication earned at the Ohio State University (1988) and a Ph.D. earned at the University of Texas at Austin (1992). Prof. Lowe immigrated to Finland in 1997. He is President of the European Media Management Education Association (EMMA) and Continuity Director of the RIPE initiative for the development of PSB in the 21st century (www.ripeat.org).
Funding for this graduate studies programme was initially provided by the C.V. Åkerlund Foundation, a non-profit charitable organisation associated with the Tampere newspaper, Aamulehti, one of the two biggest papers in Finland. CVÅ is committed to the eduation and development of media managers and makers in Finland -- and beyond. Beginning in 2013, continuing funding from CVÅ will be supplemented by a generous grant from the Communications Research Foundation (Viestintäalan tutkimussäätiö - VTS). The professorship is currently funded through 2017.
