Postgraduate studies

The School of Communication, Media and Theatre at meeting held on 20 March 2012 approved the rules and instructions for the doctoral programme of the School of Communication, Media and Theatre. These will be applied as of 1 August 2012. Until 31 July 2012, the main regulations of the School of Communication, Media and Theatre for scientific post graduate studies will be adhered to as approved by the committee on 9 June 2011. These take into account and integrate the main regulations on scientific postgraduate studies in the humanities and social sciences.

In accordance with the instructions on the doctoral programme to be applied as of 1 August 2012 by the School of Communication, Media and Theatre, a student may take the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences of the degree of Licentiate of Social Sciences with journalism and mass communication as the major subject or then the degree of Doctor of Philosophy or the degree of Licentiate of Philosophy the major subject being either theatre and drama research, or theatre art or speech communication. On a doctoral programme the degree of Doctor of Theatre Art may be taken and the Licentiate of Theatre Art with theatre work as the major subject.

Change in the postgraduate selection procedure

The application procedure changes at the beginning of 2012. Postgraduates will in future be chosen in an application procedure occurring twice a year. In spring 2012 the Graduate School of the University of Tampere will invite applications for doctoral places as proposed by the Schools.

The School of Communication, Media and Theatre - Doctoral programme in brief

Applications for a doctoral programme at the School of Communication, Media and Theatre should be made according to the subject under which the topic of the proposed dissertation may fall and in which it is possible to take a doctoral degree. These subjects are journalism and mass communication, speech communication, theatre and drama research and work. The title of the degree will be determined according to these subjects and the field of the dissertation. The possible titles are Doctor of Social Sciences and Licentiate of Social Sciences in journalism and mass communication and Doctor of Philosophy and Licentiate of Philosphy in speech communication and theatre and drama research. In theatre work the doctoral and licentiate´s degrees the titles are Doctor of Theatre Art and Licentiate of Theatre Work.

How to apply for a doctoral programme

Those eligible for doctoral studies at the School of Communication, Media and Theatre must have completed a higher university degree or equivalent in their home country or elsewhere abroad and have completed advanced studies or equivalent in the major subject of the postgraduate major subject. The professor of the subject concerned will decide how to compensate for advanced studies or on the equivalence to other studies.

The right to pursue doctoral and licentiate´s studies is direct from the School. The application should be made on a form available from the School (and also electronically at http://www.uta.fi/cmt/en/studies/postgraduate/index/hakulomake_English_CMT.doc).  The dead line of the applications is 15th May 2012 when the applications must be in the School of Communiction, Media and Theatre.

The applicant should complete the personal details. The applicant should also mark with a cross at the top of the form the degree for which s/he is applying. For the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy and Licentiate of Philosophy it should be noted that the subject should also be entered.

Applicants are advised to secure a supervisor from the School for their doctoral dissertations prior to making application to become a doctoral student. For this purpose an applicant should first and in good time contact the professor in charge of doctoral studies in the subject of interest. If a supervisor has agreed to supervise possible doctoral studies and the dissertation/artistic dissertation, this should be noted with a cross at the appropriate point and the name of the consenting supervisor(s) entered in the application. No signature is required. Those applying for doctoral studies should, however, note that requesting supervision is not tantamount to automatically securing the right to pursue a doctoral programme.

Acceptance on a doctoral programme will be for five years. Once five years have elapsed the student may apply for an extension of the time allowed for one year at a time.

 

The application should be accompanied by the following:

- Research plan (approx. 10 pages) including the following information: subject of the study, objectives, research methods and data, also implementation. The plan should demonstrate that the applicant is sufficiently familiar with the subject and the research theory.

-A preliminary study plan

-A copy of the degree certificate mentioned in the selection criteria (a copy of a higher university degree certificate and/or a licentiate´s certificate) and an account of other possible studies and research merits. If the Master´s degree has been taken outside Finland: an official transcript from university records as well as the Master´s degree certificate officially translated into English, in addition to the syllabus of previous studies and a full copy of the Master´s thesis must enclosed with the application if the Master´s degree has been taken outside Finland

-Certificates of language skills. For students planning to study in English a TOEFL score of 232/575 (or equivalent) is required. It is advisable to include also other certificates of language tests taken, if any, especially of tests taken in Finnish, Swedish, German or French

Selection criteria and decision on the right to commence doctoral studies

The following assessment criteria will be applied in the selection of doctoral students:

-Scientific or artistic quality and relevance of the research and study plan, also how realistic the implementation of the plan is

-Applicant´s basic degree, studies taken and appropriateness of the subject of the research to the doctoral programme

-Availability of expert supervision

-The applicant´s knowledge and skills, grade of earlier thesis and language proficiency required for the completion of a doctoral degree

-Applicant´s motivation and promise

Additionally note will be taken of how the subject of the research proposed fits the research profile of the School and the supervisor resources in the subject.

The committee for postgraduate studies will process the applications and make a proposal to the Dean of the School on doctoral students to be selected. Such assessments will not be public documents.
