20 years of American Studies in Finland

The Center for North American Studies at the University of Tampere, Finland, invites proposals from scholars in American Studies and all related disciplines for its Tenth Tampere Conference on American Studies. The conference is scheduled for May 18 - 20, 2005, during which the Center for North American Studies will celebrate its 20 years of existence. The theme will be 'Democratic Values: Past, Present and Future', in order to be as inclusive as possible, and to make possible a survey of a broad spectrum of research projects. We are hoping to make the 2005 conference a truly cross-disciplinary one with speakers and students from the fields of (but not limited to) American studies, leadership and management, history, literature, linguistics, sociology, political science, media ethics and gender studies.

The Tampere conferences on North American Studies were launched in 1985. The conferences are a joint effort by several departments and multidisciplinary programs at the University of Tampere. The North American Studies Program at the University of Tampere was the first multi-disciplinary area-studies program; it was founded in 1984.

Proposed presentations should represent work in progress, rather than published work. The conference especially hopes to attract Ph.D. students and post-doctoral scholars. Presentations should offer unique, original work that will then be discussed and commented on in the workshops whose purpose is to offer scholars an academic forum in which to carry on with their work. Authors will write papers, as usual, and distribute them to the chair, commentator, and other participants in the workshops by the deadline. The session chairs will coordinate contact among the session participants to ensure maximal integration of presentations.

Please email a brief abstract (200 words) of your presentation with your name, institutional affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, email address, one-page vita (maximum) no later than March 31, 2005, to NorthAmericanStudies@uta.fi. The Participants must send copies of their completed papers to the commentators by April 30. The will be no registration fee at the conference.
