Politics and the Arts Group

This international group, numbers 170+ to date, from 20+ countries, mainly but not exclusively political scientists and other academics.

The group aims to advance understanding of the particular contribution that the arts - literature, theatre, television and radio, music, the visual and plastic arts, film, architecture - bring to politics.

Thus we are interested in the political significance of imaginative constructs - novels, plays, films, paintings, sculptures, buildings, music - and in the relationship between politics and the art object as such, the symbiosis between art and politics from the political point of view. We are committed to the comparative and interdisciplinary study of art as a form of political discourse, of art as descriptive and interpretative of the political, or of the interpretation of art in terms of its political significance.

We seek to bring together political scientists and others working in the area of 'politics and the arts' - those whose research and/or teaching is concerned with the contribution of the arts to political science, the transmission of political ideas through the arts, politics as art - across national and disciplinary boundaries, for the purposes of systematizing the work that is being carried out, sharing existing research and teaching resources, establishing the research questions which require attention, and planning comparative and collaborative research projects.

We aim to realise these aspirations by way of networking, annual meetings, and joint publications, and are seeking funding and organizational help to that end. The Group is now recognized as a Standing Group of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), and will be seeking to utilize possibilities for meetings and research afforded by ECPR.
