The Finnish School in cross-pressures of change: school as an inclusive learning community (SILC)

Persons in charge: Marita Mäkinen and Helena Rajakaltio

The project is anchored in the transformative educational reform based on the renewed legislation (Basic Education Act 642/2010) and changes in the National Core Curriculum (2010) in Finland. The purpose of the project is to examine the ongoing reform, explore the linkages between contextual factors at different levels, and gain an understanding of the complexity of the transformation process. Theoretical and empirical studies will be conducted to investigate how the schools will manage in responding to the new reforms and develop innovative practices during a hectic period of economic instability and conflicting goals. A focus is also placed on addressing the need of rethinking the role and position of teachers and micro-level pedagogical concerns such as ensuring participatory and flexible learning environments that take into consideration the diversity of student needs.
