Research interests:

I am interested in child politics in its broadest sense. I view early childhood education as a political, intergenerational, national and global space, childhood as a political form of being, and children as political actors with rights. Researching from these perspectives the institutional practices in preschools allows to view children as societal actors and to gain insights into how societal structures and discourses operate and press against children's everyday experiences and their becoming as a child.

I employ comparisons of different places and times to help highlight the taken for granted ways everyday nationhood, Cold War divides, ideologies and knowledge production operates.

Zsuzsa is a co-leader of the Early Childhood Education Institutions, Policies and Practices (ECEPP) research group at the faculty.

Current projects:

  • ‘Everyday nation’ in two preschools: Australia and Hungary

By bringing together current approaches in the study of nationalism and sociology of childhood, this project develops and contrasts case studies about the ways preschool children embody, express and perform the nation in the routine contexts of their everyday lives. The study aims to shed light on children’s national and political becoming and to provide insights into the effects of larger socio-political processes on children’s everyday lives.

Collaborators: Prof Iveta Silova, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, Arizona State University, USA; A/Prof Sirpa Lappalainen, University of Eastern Finland

Through autobiographic, autoethnographic and collective biography studies of authors’ own childhoods and schooling in post/socialist spaces, the project aims to write alternative histories to inform current research and thinking about the socialist past(s) and post-socialist present(s) in different geographic locations.

A subsection of this project titled: Re-Collect / Re-Connect: Crossing the Divides through Memories of Cold War Childhoods has received funding from Kone Foundation (2019-2021) (319,000 Euro) and involves 6 international collaborators, the Lenin Museum in Tampere, Finland and the Dollardaddy Theatre Company from Budapest, Hungary.

Collaborators: Prof Iveta Silova, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, Arizona State University, USA; A/Prof Nelli Piattoeva, New Social Research, University of Tampere.

  • Diversity in the early years, policy and activism

This project explores diversity as a social fact, a collection of discourses and technical tools to address what we consider as the problem with diversity. Thus, I am interested in how diversity is recognised, understood, addressed and worked with in Finnish early childhood education and care, inlcuding policy, research, teacher education and practice. It also explores Australian and Hungarian early years policy and curricula within a social justice frame.

  • Interrupting Psy in education research and practice

This project offers critical explorations of how the psy-disciplines, Michel Foucault’s collective term for psychiatry, psychology and psycho-analysis, play out in contemporary educational spaces.

Collaborator: Prof Eva Bendix Petersen, Roskilde University, Denmark
