Transnationalism has become a buzzword in current academic discussions. Scholars with varying disciplinary backgrounds use it when addressing phenomena that are understood to constitute a trans-border space or to have effects beyond the nation state borders.
While the prominence of transnationalism as a key concept has certainly widened the scope of research and brought important new insights, the popularity of the term, however, has its downsides. It is not always clear what is meant by the term, as various scholars seem to attach rather different meanings to it. In this panel discussion, we invite scholars to discuss how transnationalism is defined and understood in different theoretical contexts and how it is applied in empirical research in different fields.
