Changing the leadership mode in a Chinese university merger

In the 1990s, there was a merger reform in higher education institutions in China. There were more than 430 new merged universities and more than 1400 higher education institutions were involved. This work provided a case study from the leadership perspective; it explored the impact of the merger on the leadership, as well as the impact of the leadership styles on the integration of the merger. An amount of valuable first-hand data concerning the internal affairs of this merged university was presented in this study. Meanwhile, through an analysis of this university’s context, the study provides a discussion on if the institutional leaders had reframed their leadership, they could have dealt with the challenges much better during the merger, as well as improved their leadership effectiveness.
