Tampere has received delightful news: the new Tampere University will be established at the beginning of 2019, as the Finnish Parliament has approved the legislative proposals that pave the way for the creation of the new higher education community in Tampere.
The University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology will be merged. Together with Tampere University of Applied Sciences they will comprise the new Tampere higher education community. Provisions that apply to all higher education institutions will be added to the Finnish Universities Act and Universities of Applied Sciences Act to promote educational collaboration.
The name of the new foundation-based university will be Tampere University. In addition to the new foundation-based university, the higher education group includes Tampere University of Applied Sciences, which is mainly owned by the new university. We are looking to create an increasingly influential and high-quality higher education community by providing multidisciplinary study modules and flexible paths to degrees and thereby taking our societal impact and quality to a whole new level. The activities of the new university will be built on the research and teaching activities of the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology and novel combinations of research and teaching.
The activities, personnel, students and assets of the two universities will be transferred to the new foundation-based Tampere University at the beginning of 2019. The President of the Republic of Finland is due to confirm the legislative proposal before the end of this year.
