The subject of Gender Studies at the University of Tampere grants the annual Honorary Flora Award to Rector Liisa Laakso.

“We appreciate the fact that Laakso has not hesitated to raise gender issues when acting as Rector of the University of Tampere,” the grantors say.

“Laakso has highlighted the importance of gender in the process of establishing the new Tampere University. She has called for gender impact assessment in a situation where the numerically more equal University of Tampere and the very male-dominated Tampere University of Technology are merging,” says Professor Johanna Kantola of Gender Studies.

“That is the kind of bold openings we need in order to make visible and dismantle gender-related structures. Promoting gender equality always requires commitment from the top management of a workplace or organisation. We hope that the future top management of Tampere University will continue along the same lines and commit itself to the development of gender equality,” Kantola says.

Since the early 1990s, the subject of Gender Studies has conferred the annual Honorary Flora Award to notable people in recognition of their merits in gender research, gender equality or promotion of feminist activism.
