The process of filling top management positions continues at the new Tampere University with the appointment of Deans to lead two of the faculties. The Transitional Board appointed the Deans of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Built Environment on Thursday, 4 October 2018.
The Transitional Board of the new Tampere University has appointed PhD Martti Kauranen as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and DTech Antti Lönnqvist as Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment upon proposal by President Mari Walls.
The Transitional Board has earlier appointed PhD Päivi Pahta as Dean of the Faculty of Education and Culture, DTech Matti Sommarberg as Dean of the Faculty of Management and Business, MD Tapio Visakorpi as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, and Jyrki Vuorinen as Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences will be appointed later this autumn. The Deans will take up their new roles on 1 January 2019.
Eight women and 20 men applied for the seven deanships. Tampere University received a total of 108 applications for the positions.
“The two newly appointed Deans bring to the University’s management team their in-depth expertise of scientific research, network management and their renewal. I’m very pleased with the appointments,” says President Mari Walls.
“The appointment of the seven Deans is a three-stage process. With the appointment of Martti Kauranen and Antti Lönnqvist, the first and second stages have now been completed with excellent results. The Board is confident that the third and final stage, the appointment of the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, will be completed soon,” says Marja Makarow, Chair of the Transitional Board.
Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences
Doctor of Philosophy (USA) Martti Kauranen has headed the Laboratory of Photonics at Tampere University of Technology since 2017. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences from 2010 to 2016.
Kauranen has extensive experience of leading research projects funded by the Academy of Finland. He has had a prominent role in the recruitment of several renowned international scientists as professors at Tampere University of Technology.
He holds many positions of trust in scientific and scholarly societies, including a seat on the Board of the Academy of Finland starting from January 2019. Martti Kauranen is a professor of physics.
Dean, Faculty of Built Environment
Doctor of Science in Technology Antti Lönnqvist has served as Dean of the Faculty of Management at the University of Tampere since 2017 and as its director in 2014-2016.
Lönnqvist held a professorship in information and knowledge management at Tampere University of Technology between 2009 and 2013.
He served as the temporary Chair of the Academic Board of the new Tampere University from April to August 2018.
Antti Lönnqvist has extensive experience in network management.
