Introduction

University of Tampere Doctoral School has been established to guide, maintain and develop doctoral training at the University of Tampere. The Doctoral School coordinates the doctoral programmes of the University and is responsible for planning and arranging joint doctoral studies available to students across disciplines.

The Vice-Rector with special responsibility for research Pertti Haapala, professor Pirjo Nikander alongside the University of Tampere Research Council are in charge of the Doctoral School. Doctoral School operates under the authority of the Rector, who, having consulted the Research Council decides the issues.

The Research Council and the University Doctoral School

  • develop and monitor the quality and systematic quality of the University’s doctoral training
  • prepare the general instructions and recommendations for doctoral training, which are confirmed by the Rector
  • coordinate, supervise and assess doctoral programmes and the need for training in the various disciplines represented at the University
  • make recommendations to the Rector on the extent of doctoral training and the resources this requires after consulting the Schools
  • plan and implement joint studies common to all doctoral students and support doctoral training to students through stipends to be granted
  • approve the content of the joint doctoral studies.

University's Doctoral Programmes

Doctoral training at the University of Tampere takes the form of doctoral programmes implemented in the Schools. Each School is responsible for the content and teaching on the doctoral programme and also grants the doctoral degree.  For each doctoral programme there are clearly defined objectives, scientific content, teaching and supervisory resources and a professor in charge.  Doctoral programmes may be those within one School or shared between several Schools. Training can also be arranged as co-operation with other universities, research institutes, business life and international networks.

University's Schools

  • The board and Dean of the respective Schools will decide on doctoral training on the proposal of the committee for doctoral education
  • The board of the School will approve the curricula for the doctoral programmes, determine the yearly intake of new doctoral students and selection criteria, likewise process matters pertaining to the evaluation of doctoral dissertations and requests for rectification
  • The Dean of the School will appoint the members of the doctoral education committee and its chair
  • The Dean will approve the new doctoral students of the School and issue the degree certificates.
  • The doctoral education committee composed of the School’s professors and other members will direct the School’s doctoral programmes and prepare official decisions concerning them.
