The core area of the Main Building will be undergoing structural repairs in a process starting in July.
Access to the Main Building will be through the passageway between the Pinni Buildings and the Main Building, where the University Bookshop is situated. Another way to enter the Main Building is to go past the entrance called Teatterimonttu and past the tennis court entering by the door beside the downstairs cafeteria Alakuppila.
The reception booth Opastus, the Registrar’s Office, the student selection office and the summer exam office and the international service point will move out of the main hallway and operate in the front section of Pinni A Building.
The Main Restaurant in the Main Building will be closed 7 July – 3 August, when only the cafeteria in the Linna Building will be open. Opening hours on weekday 8.30 – 14.30, lunch served 10.30 – 14.30.
The repairs in the main hallway and part of the forecourt by Kalevantie are scheduled for completion at the end of August. The main doors will then be in use and a route will be available from the doors to Kalevantie. The remainder of the forecourt, as far as the underpass, will be under the control of the building contractors and used for storage purposes.
The repairs to the upper floor in Lecture Rooms A1, A2a, A3 and A4 opening off the portrait gallery are scheduled for completion by the end of December.
The Main Auditorium, the upper foyer, Lecture Room A2b and the University planning unit and Personnel Training Unit will be repaired in the third phase, scheduled for completion in April 2009. A new route to the Main Auditorium will be opened from the main hallway at the point where the University Shop used to be.
At the end of the repairs white lighting will be installed in the windowless wall of the Main Building facing onto Kalevantie. This has been designed by Roope Siiroinen, a celebrated designer whose work can also be seen in the lighting of the facades of the buildings surrounding the Central Square (Keskustori) in Tampere.
The Main Building of the University was originally completed in 1960. The repairs to commence in summer are the sixth stage in the structural repairs of the University Main Building. In the seventh stage the D section will undergo structural repairs. This work is to be undertaken in 2009 or 2010.
