The applicants must have studied at the University of Tampere for at least one year. Students cannot apply to study abroad for a period for which they do not have the right to study at the University of Tampere (N.B. Students studying in the master's degree programmes organized by the ISSS have a time limit for their studies, i.e. the right to study covers two years. The Dean of the Faculty can prolong the right to study upon application.) It is possible to apply to study abroad for either one semester or one academic year in both ISEP-USA and ISEP-International-to-International unless it is otherwise stated. The placements are confirmed finally when the host universities accept the students.
CONDITIONS OF THE PLACEMENT
Students selected to the exchange programme are exempted from paying tuition fees at the host university. Accommodation usually in an apartment or a room in a dormitory is reserved for the student. In addition, students receive a monthly stipend to cover other living expenses. The amount of the stipend is equivalent to the average of living expenses in the host country.
The outgoing student pays the accommodation and living expenses of a student coming to study at the University of Tampere in her/his place. The expenses will be paid to an account held by the University of Tampere before the start of the exchange period in one instalment if the duration of the study abroad placement is one semester and in two instalments if the duration of the placement is an academic year. In the academic year 2009-2010, the programme fee for one semester is 2650 € and for an academic year 5300 €.
The ISEP Central charges a 345 $ application fee for each application sent there. The University of Tampere pays this fee on behalf of the student but requires each applicant to pay an advance payment of 315 € which will be deducted from the programme fee. The advance payment will be returned to the student if ISEP is unable to place her/him at any site. The advance payment will also be returned to the student if s/he cancels her/his study abroad due to an illness or other cogent reason. If the student cancels due to any other reason, the advance payment will not be returned.
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
American and Canadian universities require proof of proficiency in English. All universities accept the TOEFL test, the minimum scores are available in the university profiles on the ISEP webpage. Some of the universities also accept the IELTS test or a Language Proficiency Report completed by a language teacher. In Latin American universities, ISEP students take part in normal tuition with local students. Language courses are available but proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese (Brazil) is required in advance. Language proficiency may be demonstrated with a Language Proficiency Report completed by a language teacher. In Japan, Chukyo University requires command of Japanese before the exchange. Language proficiency may be demonstrated with a Language Proficiency Report completed by a language teacher. Students applying for a placement in South Africa or South Korea must demonstrate their proficiency in English with a Language Proficiency Report completed by a language teacher. Some Japanese, South African and South Korean universities also recommend taking the TOEFL test. Test scores or Language Proficiency Reports are not yet required during this application period but those nominated for an exchange may return them later.
ISEP application forms are available in the International Office, room A129 (Main Building) from 27 October onwards. The application forms can also be downloaded online at http://www.uta.fi/opiskelu/kv-asiat/laitokset/haut/applicationform_ISEP_USA_09-10.pdf for ISEP-USA and http://www.uta.fi/opiskelu/kv-asiat/laitokset/haut/applicationform_ISEP_I-to-I_09-10.pdf for ISEP International-to-International. The application form and its enclosures (a transcript of academic records as a pdf file from NettiOpsu, a curriculum vitae, motivation letter and study plans for each prospective host university all written in the host university's language of study) must be returned to the International Office, room A129 (Main Building) by Monday 17 November 2008 at 3 pm. In addition to the application form, Master's degree programme students (only those students taking a separate two-year Master's programme; not those students studying towards an ‘ordinary' Master's degree) are required to submit a statement from the supervisor of their Master's thesis in which the supervisor supports their application to a given host university (how the exchange period would contribute to writing the Master's thesis or how the student would otherwise benefit from this period, e.g. which qualifications required for her/his degree the student would be able to acquire while studying abroad).
Information on ISEP member universities is available on the ISEP webpage at http://www.isep.org/ .
