This year the University's own radio station Radio Moreeni will celebrate its 20th anniversary. It is the only radio station in Finland to be run by a university.
Since 1989 Radio Moreeni has offered students and Tampere people in general programmes that are something apart from the mainstream. It has also provided an opportunity to participate in making radio programmes. Moreeni is not only a local radio station but also a teaching radio station and a genuinely communal radio station. There are currently some fifty helpers making their own programmes.
Moreeni is to hold its 20th anniversary seminar on Monday 23 February. The theme is young people and the radio of the future. As a tool radio is changing rapidly and is now available on a mobile phone, in the net, and on television. For radio the new technologies are both a threat and an opportunity. What forms will radio assume in the future? What will the ‘new radio' of 2010 be like? The working language of the seminar will be Finnish. The seminar will be broadcast live in Moreeni and simulcast on the internet.
In addition to the seminar Moreeni will celebrate its 20 years on the air with an open day next autumn. Then the general public will have an opportunity to see in action all the other media of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Tampere: University TV, the publication edited by the students entitled Utain, and the photojournalism publication Katse.
