The Demola open innovation environment has been recognised for its contribution to enabling open innovation in the Tampere region. During the Information Society Day on March 10, 2009, the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications presented Demola with the "Activator of the Year award".
Demola is a service offered by universities in Tampere, ICT and media companies, and the Technology Centre Hermia to multidisciplinary student teams to develop digital products and services based on the concepts of companies.
The companies bring their project ideas for student teams to cultivate and collaborate with them. Demola offers the teams the tools, but the teams need to come up with the solutions themselves. The results are developed into real products and services to be part of the operations of the companies. An additional goal is to give birth to new companies.
During the first five months about 100 students have participated in the first twelve projects, and their number is constantly growing. The students involved feel that they have learned a lot so far and formed connections with real companies.
