The campus areas of the University of Tampere are becoming more compact with the opening in summer of two new buildings, one of them the Virta Building on the main campus and the other the Arvo Building on the Kauppi campus.
“The operational synergy benefits of centralization have now been taken quite a long way” says the Director of Administration, Mr. Timo Lahti.
The Virta Building stands behind the Linna Building , the street address being Åkerlundinkatu 5 (known as Sähkökortteli). The building comprises four floors with a surface area of some 7,400 square metres.
Its occupants include the unit for early education which moved in from being on the other side of the city centre. Other occupants are Synergos (research and education) Sente (regional development), TAPRI (conflict and peace research) the Finnish Social Science Data Archive and the Journalism Research and Development Centre.
On the Kauppi campus the Arvo Building houses the Department of Nursing Science and the medical branch of the Library known as Tertio. The Arvo Building stands near the other buildings of the Faculty of Medicine, the street address is Lääkärinkatu 1, and its surface area totals approx. 7,000 square metres.
“These arrangements on the Kauppi campus ensure that the units located there will have premises for a long time to come. The new building is modern and now we will be able to set about renovating the other premises in Kauppi” Mr. Lahti continues.
“With a view to the future there is still building permission available. Next we shall concentrate on the completion of the structural repairs, but it appears that there is a need for a small extension to the sports building Atalpa.”
