On 7 September the collegiate body of the University of Tampere chose a new Board for the University as required by the new Universities Act. There are 11 members, six from within the University and five from outside. Of the members from within the University community two are professors, two are from the teaching and other personnel and two are representatives of the students.
The external members are Rauno Ihalainen, Leena Lahti, Kaija Majoinen, Kari Neilimo and Riitta Varpe.
The University members are Professor Arto Haveri (local government studies) and Professor Jyrki Nummenmaa (computer sciences); Marja Alestalo and Kaisa Lammi representing teaching and other personnel and Timo Perälä and Johanna Roihuvuo representing the students.
The chair and vice chair will be chosen at the inaugural meeting of the Board at the end of September.
The Board is the supreme decision-making body of the University of Tampere. Its term begins immediately and continues until the end of 2012.
According to the provisions of the new Universities Act, the tasks of the Board include determining the University's operations and main economic objectives, strategy, the principles for guidance, the action and financial plan and the budget, likewise the closing of the books for confirmation by the collegiate body. The Board is moreover required to select the Rector, approve the regulations and agreements in principle pertaining to the operations of the University and to determine its operational structure. The Board moreover decides on the number of students to be admitted to the University.
The University Board is the outcome of the decision of the 33-member collegiate body of the University, which includes representatives of the professors, the teaching and other personnel and of the students. The chair of this collegiate body is Dean Hanna Suutela.
