The Board of the University of Tampere at a meeting on 20 October unanimously elected Professor Kaija Holli to be the new Rector. The Rector's five-year term of office commences on 1 January 2010, when the new Universities Act comes into force. Professor Holli, who holds a Ph.D. in medicine, has served as Rector since August 2009.
“Kaija Holli has demonstrated her ability as a strategic leader of the University at a time of change and dynamic development,” says Chairman of the Board, Kari Neilimo.
“We have a good Rector. The Board was happy to make this decision,” he continues.
Since 2000 Kaija Holli has served the University of Tampere as professor of palliative care, as vice head of the Medical School 2001-2003 and head since 2004.
The first Vice Rector, Pertti Haapala, Professor of Finnish History and the second Vice Rector, Harri Melin, Professor of Sociology, were elected for five-year terms commencing from the beginning of next year.
“As the Rectorate we represent the University from a broad base because we come from different sectors,” says Rector Holli.
“The Rectors should act as a team and our early period has shown that that's what happens. Thus the election for the Vice Rectors to continue was a happy decision,” she adds.
The new Universities Act strengthens the position of the Rector and also the financial responsibility. According to this legislation the Rector is responsible for the preparation and presentation of matters to be processed by the Board. The Rector must likewise enjoy the confidence of the Board.
