Arvo, the new building at the Medical School, was opened at the beginning of November.
The Arvo Building, street address Lääkärinkatu 1 on the Kauppi campus, houses the Department of Nursing Science, part of the Medical School and Tertio, the health sciences branch of the University Library.
According to Rector Kaija Holli, the University hopes that through Arvo it can accord recognition to medical and nursing science.
"Medical education is a jewel in the crown at the University of Tampere. The quality is such that it is a distinction indeed to qualify as a doctor at the University of Tampere," she says.
The name of the building commemorates the great Doctor Arvo Ylppö. It will be abbreviated to A Building in an environment where there is already a B Building.
"The University is endeavouring to concentrate its premises, which yields synergy and makes it easier for people in different fields to interact," says Director of Administration Timo Lahti.
Arvo received the City of Tampere award for this year's good building construction.
The justification for the awards states that the external architecture of Arvo relies on a stark contrast between a basic form of rigid straight lines and powerful glass interludes. The interior features exciting elements which tie the levels together. The building is a splendid link in the chain of modern building tradition in Tampere
The building was designed by the firm Helamaa and Heiskanen, the principal architect being Matti Mastosalo. Arvo was completed in less than three years, while the time elapsing between the design of a public building and its completion is generally in the order of seven years.
Director of Administration Timo Lahti is delighted: "Designed with style, executed with skill."
