The Center for North American Studies will host a weeklong symposium "Institutions in Context: The Design and Impact of Political Institutions during and after Cold War".
The purpose of the symposium is to bring together a diverse group of leading scholars from Europe and North America – including political scientists, economists, mathematicians, and law professors – to discuss the design and impact of political institutions during and after the Cold War.
The ending of the Cold War provides a remarkable opportunity to examine political institutions in emerging as well as established democracies. Institutions have a central role in historical, political, legal, and economic research to name just a few fields. The symposium is designed to approach institutions from multiple angles to provide a richer and more comprehensive understanding of the subject.
On Monday May 31 there will be open lectures throughout the day in the Väinö Linna auditorium of the Linna Building. The speakers include Barbara Barrett (U.S. Ambassador to Finland 2008-2009) Rein Taagepera (UC Irvine and University of Tartu) as well as Charles Plott and John Ledyard (Caltech).
The symposium is funded by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation. A key aspect of the symposium is its location in Finland, a country with a unique history of direct conflict and careful accord with the former Soviet Union.
