On the edge of the main campus of the University of Tampere, just behind C Wing can be seen cultivated areas from which is it planned to put food straight onto the table for University people.
The campus cultivation project was started up by the environmental division of the Student Union and the environmental association Dodo. It is hoped that the project will serve to promote discussion on the role of urban areas in global food production.
According to the initiators of the project, urban cultivation can both promote the use of vegetables, bring food production closer to citydwellers and provide a novel way of making cityspace pleasanter while fostering urban communality.
The project is open to the entire University community. Cultivation is set to continue throughout summer and remain open to new participants. No record is to be kept of hours worked; it’s all about communality and being a volunteer.
