The day of the opening ceremony also marks the culmination of the University's festive year

The day of the opening ceremony, 2 September, also marks the 50th anniversary of the University being located in Tampere. That is when in 1960 the University (at that time a civic college) migrated from Helsinki to Tampere.

At the opening ceremony the speech in honour of this commemorative year will be given by Chancellor Emeritus Heikki Koski. The opening ceremony will be relayed from the Main Auditorium on video to Lecture Theatres A1 and D10b in the Main Building and to the television screens in the Main Hall and Pinni B.

Other events include campus tours, music and a film presentation of the history of the University. In the course of the day there will be opportunities to see the new museum room, A131 off the hall of the Main Building. There will also be three exhibitions: 50 years of the University in Tampere – a photography exhibition, an ex libris exhibition and a display of museum exhibits in the upper foyer. Alumni products will be on sale in the main hall, likewise the latest books from Tampere University Press and the various departments.
