Representatives of both parties in the Syrian conflict will participate in the Middle East and North Africa Studies colloquium in Tampere on Friday and Saturday 24 - 25 August. A special session on Syria will be organized. Director
Salam Kawakibi from ARI (Arab Reform Initiative) in Paris, who has solid expertise in the activities of Syrian dissidents, and Professor
George Jabbour, who worked as an advisor to the former President of Syria
Hafez al-Assad and has up to date observations on the internal situation of the country as well as the views of the ruling groups, are amongst the participants.
The theme of the scientific colloquium is the Middle East and North Africa at Crossroads - Changes in the Past, Present and Future. Over 120 researchers have registered as participants. Apart from the Finnish experts there will be top-level international participants from nearly all countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean.
The keynote speakers include Professor
Slimane Hachi who is a well-known humanist and Director of the National Research Centre on Prehistory, Anthropology and History in Algeria and Professor
Raoudha Guemara from Tunisia.
There is a special panel on the developments in Turkey in the colloquium in which both Finnish and Turkish experts will discuss the possible futures of this up and coming nation.
The perspectives of Iran, including the nuclear weapons problematic, will be discussed as a part of the challenges in the Persian Gulf region. Mr.
Pekka Haavisto, MP, will be the commentator in the panel on Iran.
There will be 15 panels in all and dozens of interesting presentations. The programme will start on Friday at 10.00 o’clock in the Tampere Hall.
The colloquium is organised by the Finnish Institute in the Middle East, the University of Tampere Peace Research Institute TAPRI and ALF, the Finnish network of the Anna Lindh Foundation.
