The University Collegiate Body elected the external members of the University Board in its meeting on 7 November and confirmed the result of the elections of the staff and student representatives.
There are eleven members in all of whom six represent the staff and students of the University and five are external members. The new Board starts its work at the beginning of 2013 and its term of office is four years.
The election of the Board members who represent the staff of the University was held on 25-30 October 2012.
The working group appointed by the University Collegiate Body worked for a year to find the external members. Antti Johansson, who is a student member of the working group, says that the cooperation between the Collegiate Body and the working group ran smoothly.
– The work of the working group was based on trust between the Collegiate Body and the working group. The diverse group composed of professors, other staff and the students worked closely together to assist the Collegiate Body according to the instructions that had been given. As a result of the cooperation, the Collegiate Body elected the five external members for the Board of the University.
– Because of the good reputation and efficient operative management of the University of Tampere, top-level individuals have taken up this demanding task for the next four years Johansson says.
According to Professor Jouni Häkli, a member of the Collegiate Body, the Collegiate Body is like the parliament of the University and it has worked openly and engaged in a dialogue.
– The way the external members of the Board were elected is a decision that was genuinely made by the Collegiate Body. It did not just approve the decision. The way the decision was reached has increased the feelings of commitment in the members of the Collegiate Body.
According to the Chair of the University Collegiate Body, Professor Pirkko Pitkänen, the University of Tampere got a good Board again.
– The new Board, as the one now in office, has wide-ranging know-how. We paid special attention to strategic management because the national and international competition between universities is only going to increase in the future. In addition to strategic know-how, the new members of the Board have experience of societal impact, financial expertise and diverse know-how of top-level positions on the national and international level and in research and development. I also want to thank the present Board on behalf of the whole Collegiate Body for its outstanding and excellent work.
